Re: Backups
Checkpoint advancement is stopped during a backup. The checkpoint can
only be 1024 log file generations deep. If it reaches that depp,
things will start failing with JET_errCheckpointDepthTooDeep (-614).
Beacuse 1024 log files multiplied by 5 MB is 5 GB, this means you'd
need 5 GB of logged data before hitting the limit.
While this sounds like a lot, it can easily be hit if the backup
software prompts the user to insert a new tape, but nobody is at the
console to see the message. After a while (could be a few days), the
checkpoint-too-deep error will bring things down in an ugly manner.
You probably won't see it, but you *did* ask what could happen. :)
I'm not a PR guy, but I have a feeling that the wording I'm supposed
to use is something like 'We are evaluating eliminating this problem
in the next release of Exchange.'.
