recovery of database
In the words a wise person, Murphy was an optomist!
I have a client situation which I need assistance with and I am at wits end.
Here is the situation:
a week ago, I received word from my backup system that a tape had snapped
during backup, this was the main tape that was used to backup the exchange
database and mailboxes on Friday due to the size of the database. When I
went out to recover the tape, I had an error on the server screen mentioning
that one of the mirror (software, not hardware due to a poor choice in a
Dell server I inherited) drives had failed and synchronization could not
happen. I shut down the system and found out the primary drive had died.
Now I had a mirror drive with everything on it that I could not boot up on
and a dead hard drive. i replaced the dead drive and reloaded 2000SBS to
access the information and get the users shared folders online. Now, with
the tape still stuck inside its housing and no real way to access it (tape
is shredded in the housing), I have been trying to figure out how to get the
priv1.edb/stm to get remounted to the exchange. I have done an eseutil /p
(r didn't work), and repaired the corrupted database, and have done a /g for
integrity with no problems. When i try to remount the drive, I get an error
which when I look it up says it would have to be insufficient disk space, of
which I have 13GB free. MAPI service is refusing to start and I cannot get
the EXMERGE to work since it says that the information store is not active
(which the service is). The messages are not supremely critical since I
moved them off of the exchange server to a hosted solution about 8 months
ago, but there are messages that they do refer to on occasion that they
would like to be able to access. I am at wits end and if someone has a clue
as to how to get an edb to remount, I think it would be great.

Re: recovery of database
Third party tools would make this really easy and may be worth it to you as
a consultant if you run into these situations very often. Quest or Ontrak
can read the DB files directly and extract what can be extracted.
