Standby Server
I need to create a backup (standby) Exch 2000 server. It does not need to be
HA. (I believe that cannot be done.) All I want to do is keep a current copy
of the live data on a second Exch 2000 server that I could point the
workstations to if there is a problem with the main server. The only thing
that needs to be automatic is the data replication.

Re: Standby Server
You will need to look at Exchange 2000 Clustering or Third party software
such as http://www.xosoft.com/products/f_WANSyncHA_failover.shtml or look at
upgrading to Exchange 2007 and using SCR which will be included with
Exchange 2007 SP1 due out later this year,
http://www.xosoft.com/products/f_WANSyncHA_failover.shtml.

Wansync doen not work on a Domain Controller. And other programs you can
suggest?

Re: Standby Server
If you are going to spend the money, which will be significant, I would
steer you to upgrading to Exchange 2007. Two fold reasons, Exchange 2000
lifecycle has passed and why buy third party software now that will not be
needed when you decide to upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP1? So are you planning
on upgrading to Exchange 2007 anytime soon? I would at least do a price
comparison between upgrading to Exchange 2007 and staying with Exchange 2000
and third party software. I would also do a feature comparison to see how
much the new features in Exchange 2007 will affect your users and your
environment. Will you run more efficiently, save time and resources on
antispam features, SCR capabilities, etc.

Re: Standby Server
Thank you for you information. I am coming up with the same thoughts.

One final question: Our main server (with Exchange) is a PDC the machine
that I would use for the standby Exchange server is a BDC. Any problem with
that?

Well, when you upgrade to Exchange 2007 you will probably be looking
at adding 3 or more new servers, depending on how you hand out the
Exchange 2007 roles and what kind of redundancy you require. I would
consider utilizing your existing servers as DCs and keep Exchange 2007
on new member servers. If that is not in your budget now, then you
are probably looking at 3rd party software to assist you with Exchange
2000. As you mentioned, most third party replication software will
not fully support Exchange on a DC, including SteelEye's LifeKeeper
Protection Suite for Exchange.

SteelEye will however support basic data replication in this
environment with SteelEye Data Replication. In that case, recovery on
the standby server would involve database portability and re-homing
users. Check out these articles for the details...
