Those settings look correct. Just a shot, but can you telnet to any of
these external domains from your Exchange Server on port 25? Thinking maybe
your firewall is not configured correctly. When the message times out, what
NDR is fired back?

John saves the day~!
Ok, telnetting from the mail server fails.
I then tried telnetting from my workstation - works
I then went back to the mail server and checked the default gateway, dns
settings etc - all _looked_ OK.
I then went to a dos prompt and saw that the default gateway was wrong. I
then went back into the network properties only to find that 192.168.1.25
was actually 182.168.1.25 - go figure!
I have no clue how that entry got changed - the default gateway has always
been 192.168.1.25 (for at least 3 years) but that was it.
Thanks John - your simple test highlighted the problem! Mail now works :-)
