Re: Exchange defrag vs Windows defrag?
Man, that's a tough one. In the link you sent me are differing opinions.
For now I'll take the path of least effort and not worry about file-level
defrag.
Is it possible to change the time of the daily online maintenance? I notice
that it defrags the public store multiple times a day. Is there anyway to
control this?
Thanks,
Linn

Re: Exchange defrag vs Windows defrag?
I personally do not defrag Exchange volumes at the file level but if you
must just move the database files to another volume before defrag as
suggested in the link. As for changing the daily maintenance routine, you
can adjust the schedule
1. Start Exchange System Manager.
2. Expand Administrative Groups, expand Your_Administrative_Group, and then
expand Servers.
3. Expand Your_Server_Name, and then expand Your_Storage_Group.
4. Right-click the mailbox store object that you want, and then click
Properties.
5. Click the Database tab.
6. In the Maintenance interval box, click an appropriate schedule. (Note:
Click Customize if you want to customize the schedule.)
7. Click OK.
8. Exit Exchange System Manager.

Re: Exchange defrag vs Windows defrag?
Ok, cool. I can see why they schedule the maintenance to run each day but
why would they run it at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5:00am each day? Isn't once a day
sufficient?
Does it matter that the mailbox store and the public folders store have
excatly the same schedule?
And lastly, why is it that when looking at the log files the mail box store
runs only once while the public folders store runs multiple times?
Thanks,
Linn

I beleive its set to run between 1-5 AM once during that time slot. Same
schedule is fine for both stores. What log files are you referring too?

Re: Exchange defrag vs Windows defrag?
The application event log files for event 1221. Each night I get 4 from the
MSExchangeIs Public Store and 1 from MSExchangeIs Mailbox Store. The Public
Store logs happen at 1:00am, 2:15am, 3:19am and 4:16am roughly. The Mailbox
Store is at 1:40am roughly.
All the Public Store entries say basically the same thing:
The datase "First Storage Group\Public Folder Store(CMW-EXCH)" has 42
megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated.
Thanks much,
Linn

Re: Exchange defrag vs Windows defrag?
You could adjust the PF store settings to once a night. No need for it to
run 4 four times.

Re: Exchange defrag vs Windows defrag?
John,
How do I configure this? Just simply limit it to one hour? I don't see any
other setting that looks obvious.
Thanks,

Re: Exchange defrag vs Windows defrag?
Yes, just select 1 hour in the grid the apply. Verify the next morning the
schedule has taken effect.

Re: Exchange defrag vs Windows defrag?
Will do, thanks. The reason I'm looking at this is because of a tape backup
issue. I'm using Backup Exec and my exchange server is the media server. I
run full backups 6 nights of the week, it's what my management wants. But
for some reason, on Thursday and Friday the backup of the Exchange server
takes 12 hours rather than the normal 4.5 - 5 hours. Just trying to figure
out why.
Backup Exec tech support suggested defraging both the Exhange system and
file level. There has to be some process running on those days that's
causing the slow down but I cannot figure it out.
Thanks for the help John, we'll see if that changes anything tomorrow
morning.
