Users can not receive external mail suddenly.
We are running Exchange 2003 w/SP1 and all of a sudden our users can not
receive external mail. It had been working fine for years until this
afternoon. Internal mail flows fine.

External users all receive the following message:
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's
email server. Please contact your system administrator.
<(domain name) #5.5.0 smtp;553 sorry, that domain isn't in my
list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1)>

Here is the strange part. Earlier in the day I attempted to restore one
users mailbox with Veritas Backup Exec. The user received a message in his
mailbox saying that his mail was restored, but there wasn't anything there.

I don't think anyone has been able to receive external mail since. I hope
it's just a coincidence but my luck isn't that good.

I've tried restarting the machine, starting and stopping the virtual SMTP
server and the Exchange store.
Nothing looks out of the ordinary on the server itself or in the event log.

Any help would be extremely appreciated...

Hi,

The message " #5.5.0 smtp;553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of
allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1)"
is not coming from the exchange server.

Do you have a smtp gateway in front of the server?
Is anything changed on this server?

Leif

Re: Users can not receive external mail suddenly.
Thanks for the response Leif.
The only device in front of our Exchange server is a Netscreen firewall, and
that looks to be OK.
Everything I read seems to point to a DNS issue. Is it possible there is an
issue at the ISP and that it isn't internal to our network? (XO
Communications)

Re: Users can not receive external mail suddenly.
Hi,

It is possible, but if we look at the ndr the mails are received/rejected
somewhere so this would mean that your MX record is pointing to a wrong IP
address.

If you post your domain name we could try to see if the DNS is configured
properly.

Re: Users can not receive external mail suddenly.
Thanks for the info. The issue seemed to resolve itself overnight, so maybe
it was an issue with the MX record being directed to the wrong IP
temporarily. Let's see if everything is working Monday morning.
Thanks for the help.
