Upgrades and 64bitness
I have heard that Exchange Server 2007 will be 64bit only (which I think is
great).

We are needing to upgrade now and would like do so in a way that will make
us ready for Exchange 2007.

Can we buy a new 64bit server running Windows Server 2003 x64 and run
Exchange server 2003 on it as our back end server?

I am assuming that this would allow us to simply upgrade the exchange
installation later on.

RE: Upgrades and 64bitness
Hello Kenneth,

Thank you for posting.

You are right. Microsoft will only offer 64-bit version of Exchange server
2007 to improve the performance. For the detailed information, please refer
to the following article:
Frequently Asked Questions about Exchange Server 2007 Beta 1
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/preview/faq.mspx

But I am afraid you should not buy Windows server 2003 64-bit edition now.
According to my experience, Exchange server 2003 can not run on 64-bit
versions of Windows server 2003. For the system requirements of Exchange
Server 2003, please refer to the following articles:
System Requirements for Exchange Server 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/evaluation/sysreqs/2003.mspx
Is there option to install Exchange 2003 on Windows 2003 64 Bit Edition?

Hope this information helps.

Sincerely,
