Exchange 2000 Data drive almost full
A client has a server that is running out of storage space. At last check
the M drive has lessthan 2Gig free. In doing some searching I found an
article regarding enabling circular logging however the drive is still
filling up. I need to find a way to free space on this server but do not
know of any other safe way to do this. The last thing I need is for this box
to crash. Any advice on getting this drive cleaned up? There are a total of
18 users on this system. one user has a mailbox with 3,457,095kb of data.
Perhaps to have everyone to clean up their mailboxes would help some but it
may niot be enough. Any suggestions are welcome.

The M drive is virtual - don't touch anything in there.

I probably wouldn't enable circular logging - but you do need to make sure
you are doing proper online backups of Exchange....using NTBackup or other
Exchange-aware backup software with the appropriate agents. Do not use
mailbox level backup. An online backup should purge your committed
transaction logs.

Re mailbox sizes - well, of course that makes a difference. You really ought
to implement mailbox quotas - for all users - even if some of them are set
up with exceptions so they can have larger mailboxes. Does the user with the
3.5GB mailbox even know what's in there? I'd doubt it.

You can also move your databases & logs to another disk/volume, if you are
not nearing the 16GB Exchange database limit but are running low on disk
space.

Sorry, I should've said the E: drive. I realise the M drive is virtual.

I'd rather not have circular logging enabled but it was set to clean up the
drive a bit. I am doing nightly backps using BackupExec w/ Exchange module.
I'm also running a backup using NTBackup once a week to a Snap drive.

I'll get with the users and have them clean up their accounts as a start.

thanks for the advice.

Should not be needed if you're doing your backups right - the transaction
logs should be purged nightly if so...

Make sure you're doing *online* backups of the stores - not
mailbox/brick-level backups. If you must do the latter, do them only in
conjunction with an online store backup....

Can't hurt. Quotas are a must, though!

You're welcome; hope it's helped.
