Upgrading from 2k to 2k3 domain with Exchange
Just had a question. I know there are issues with ad getting corrupted if you
upgrade an win2k domain wtih exchange 2000 to a 2003 domain. Is there any
issues with having exchange 2003 running on a 2000 domain and upgrading the
domain to 2003 so they are both at the same level?

Generally no. Practically never happens.

Nothing is perfect so I put in the words "generally"
and "practically" and NOT because I really think
there are exceptions to this. Certainly not in my own
experience.

Actually, AD practically (there I go again) never gets
corrupted short of bad disk drives/controllers. Even
then it is very unlikely.

You will have to deal with Schema (ADPrep) issues
to DO the upgrade but it is a very safe operation.

You also SHOULD (read: MUST) perform backups before
you do this, but truthfully this recommendation is mostly
just to ensure your backups are up to date which they should
be anyway.

(System State backup is how you backup AD.)

Also note: You are in FAR MORE danger of losing AD to
a disk failures or even (separately) to virus and trojans than
to an upgrade problem.
