On our Exchange 2000 server we are getting connections created from different ip addresses and they stay connected for long periods at a time, even days. I have checked about relaying and we are not relaying so what are these connections and how can I stop them? I realize that when new mail comes in you will see connections but they are brief, like 10 - 15 seconds at the most, but these are on for thousands of seconds if I don't terminate them first. Is this something to be worried about?
As long as your server is listening for and allowing SMTP connections you will probably see "mysterious" connections. If you are not an open relay then you shouldn't have to worry about these. The fact is spammers may be trying to use your server...but will obviously fail if you are set up properly. Try turning of connection filtering with blacklist checking, it helps a bit. A connection does not indicate a successful mail transfer. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823866 319356 How To prevent unsolicited commercial e-mail in Exchange 2000 Server http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;319356 Good Luck! -- Susan Hubbard Microsoft PSS sfodel@online.microsoft.com Please do not send email directly to this alias.
