SMTP 5.3.5 errors in a single-server environment
For the last two days, I've been getting non-delivery reports for outbound
mail traffic going to the Internet:
A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce
between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact your
administrator. <server.mycompany.com #5.3.5>
This e-mail server is also the DNS server (and the AD server, and just about
everything else). Internal e-mails are fine, and we can receive e-mail for
the Internet OK.
We recently installed Symantec Mail Security 4.6 for Exchange, so I thought
that might be the problem. I uninstalled it, but the errors continue.
I've already tried the suggestions listed in KB316617 and KB555418, which
seem to fit my situation perfectly, but with no success.
One important detail is: when I reboot the server, Exchange does not start
correctly. I get "The Directory Service Referral interface failed to service
a client request. RFRI is returning the error code:[0x3f0]." (Event ID 9074,
Category RFR Interface, Source MSExchangeSA). I followed the instructions
listed in KB895858 and confirmed everything there was OK. I made sure "File
and Printer Sharing" was turned on for the NIC (single-homed), the
SeSecurityPrivilege for Exchange Enterprise Servers domain local group is
properly set, and File Replication Service (FRS) is working with a second
computer that works as a backup AD and DNS box. I even went so far as to
shut down this second server and start up my Exchange server by itself, with
no luck.
nslookup reports the Exchange server as the MX server, BTW.
So, who can solve my little problem? Thanks.

Hi,
Try to see if this will help:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=BC1881C7-925D-4A29-BD42-71E8563C80A9&displaylang=en
How are you delivering emails to the internet (using a smarthost or directly
via DNS)?
Have you created a SMTP connector or are you using the default SMTP server?
Any specific configuration changes on the above?

Re: SMTP 5.3.5 errors in a single-server environment
Actually, MS tech support found the problem for me; we had previously had GFI
installed as our spam filter, but because of problems with the product I had
uninstalled it and switched to Symantec Mail Security instead. However, the
GFI product left its hooks in the system and was keeping e-mails from flowing
properly. Reinstalling GFI, then uninstalling it again solved the problem.
