How to defrag a big .stm file
Hello everybody,

i have a problem on our Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server.
One .stm file from our 3 databases got bigger and bigger until the whole
disk was full (started last Friday until monday - no virus problems).

Then i stopped the .edb database that belongs to the big .stm file. I
deleted some temporary files from the server and started the database again.
My exchange is now running without any problems.

But my .stm file size is now 89gb. The corresponding .edb file is 2,71gb big.
The whole disk has 133gb (now 30gb free disk space).

1. Question: How can i look inside my .stm file to see
 - how big the database really is (not the 89gb my file system tells me)
 - what files made my .stm file so big?

2. Question: How can i shrink my .stm file?
 - Should i do this with an offline defragmentation (eseutil) or is ther a
better way
   to shrink the .stm file?
 - Do i really need 120% free space on the same drive whrere the .stm file is
   stored?

Thank you for your help.
Best regards,
Karl-Heinz Fuchs

Re: How to defrag a big .stm file
When you mount a new store, and use move mailbox to move all the mailboxes
to it, all items are fully promoted to the edb. At that point, dismount and
delete the old store and you have effectively truncated the stm file.
