Exchange Backup Failing
My Exchange Information Store and Shadow Copy is failing due to insufficient
disk space. When this happens, Veritas prompts for another tape, however, no
one is there and it times out and the backup fails. What I would like to do
is back the Information Store and Shadow Copy onto a network drive. Then, I
would back it up on tape when I arrive in the morning.
My dilemma is, timing. I start my remote backup around 10:30 p.m. It backs
4 remote servers in the following order: TS1, TS2, IIS, EXCHANGE
By the time it reaches Exchange, users are on the system (we have users in
the EST, CMT, and PST time zones) . Is it possible to backup the Information
Store and Shadow Copy while users are logged in? Could this cause an issue?
Thanks

Re: Exchange Backup Failing
If you are using the exchange agent you can perform online backups while
users are accessing exchange.

Re: Exchange Backup Failing
Thanks for you reply Kevin. I am not sure if I am using the exchange agent.
I use the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers. Is this what you are
referring to?

Re: Exchange Backup Failing
No - there is a specific exchange agent option from veritas. Within BE check
where the serial numbers are entered and you should see it there if it is
installed. You can also look at the backup log which shows if the agent is
being used during the exchange backups. What size is your tape drive? Are
your exchange logs truncating when you perform a full backup of the exchange
information store?

Re: Exchange Backup Failing
Thanks for you reply. I have a 36/72 gig tape drive. It would be
sufficient, however, I back up three other servers on this tape as well. So
I thought it would be ideal to backup the Exchange to a network drive, then
when I get in, back it onto a new tape.
The "Agent for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server" appears to be licensed and
installed on my Veritas Server. So does this means I can perform a backup of
the Mail Boxes, Info Store and Shadow Copy while users are on the system?

Re: Exchange Backup Failing
Information Store and Shadow Copy. Mailbox backups don't know - not
supported by Microsoft. I would check Veritas docs.
