RE: Exchange 2000 SP2 on Windows 2000 SP4 in a W2K3 domain
Hello,
Thank you for posting here!
As you say, given that Exchange 2000 is installed on a Windows 2000 member
server that is a member of the Windows 2003 domain, then the functional
level of the Windows 2003 domain can be raised to the Windows 2003 Forest
Functional level.
Note the requirement for Windows 2003 Forest Functional level is that all
Domain Controllers be Windows Server 2003 controllers. This allows for
Windows 2000 members servers to coexist in such a domain/forest.
Here is a document that should thoroughly detail the answer to the question
you have raised:
"Microsoft. Exchange Server Compatibility with Microsoft Windows Server
Operating Systems"
White Paper
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/evaluation/ti/tiwinnet.asp
Hope it helps. Have a nice day.
Sincerely,
John Chen, MCSE, MCSA, MCDBA, MCSD

Re: Exchange 2000 SP2 on Windows 2000 SP4 in a W2K3 domain
Aha, no sir, assumptions can be dangerous :-)... they will keep running
Exchange 2000 and bypass Exchange 2003 completely. But not to worry this fix
will keep 'm runing. If there are any doubts about that please reply to this
mail and then we will not raise the functional levels.
Have a nice day

Re: Exchange 2000 SP2 on Windows 2000 SP4 in a W2K3 domain
Hi,
I have searched for related cases in our database. So far, I just find a
few cases which indicate RUS may not work properly after raising the
functional level. And the problem will not occur on every server. I did not
find anything else:) Although the operation is safe, I still suggest you
backup your DCs and Exchange servers first.
Hope everything is going well with you.

Re: Exchange 2000 SP2 on Windows 2000 SP4 in a W2K3 domain
We've got all 14 servers involved backed up daily ... but we're never in a
mood to realy need/use them. I'll let you know the result when I pull the
switch.

As promised, the feedback:
We're running in Windows 2003 domain & forest functional leverl (W2K3 R2 x64
bit) and have applied the hotfix from
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=873059 to the Exhange 2000 Server (Ent.
