I have two W2K SP4 DCs (SERVER1 and SERVER2) and want to upgrade to W2003: - SERVER1 has the following roles: PDC, RID, Infrastructure - SERVER2 has the following roles: Schema, Operations 1. What server should I upgrade first or does it matter? Can I do one at a time or do you suggest doing both at the same time? 2. On what server do i need to run the adprep /forestprep and /domainprep on? Or do I run both commands on both DCs? 3. I have front end and back-end Exchange 2000 SP3 servers running W2K SP4. Any issues after upgrading the DCs that will impact the exchange servers? Thanks for your help. Frank
Hi, First you will need to read this and do something to avoid mangled attributes: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314649/en-us Windows adprep /forestprep should be run on the schema master. Windows adprep /domainprep should be run on the infrastructure master Apart from the article mentioned in the beginning there should be no isues running exchange 2000 in a windows 2003 domain. Thanks. So, I can upgrade one DC at a time or do I need to do both at the same time? Hi, You can upgrade one at the time. 2000 and 2003 domain controllers can coexist without any problems. Regarding the mangled attribute doc. Just want to clear on what scenario applies. Since my exch 2000 and DCs are all at W2k SP4 currently I would do Scenario #2 (Exch 2000 Schema Changes are installed before you run win 2003 adprep / forestprep command) correct? Can the mangled attribute piece be done at any time prior or does it have to be done right before I do the actual upgrade? Thanks much for your help. fv "Leif Pedersen [MVP]" wrote: > Hi, > > You can upgrade one at the time. 2000 and 2003 domain controllers can > coexist without any problems. > > Leif > > "IVT" wrote in message > news:113FA525-6E6C-4C4E-BA90-7D79C59C516F@microsoft.com... > > Thanks. Hi, The mangled attributes piece can be run at any time before running the adprep command. So I can run that on the server now even though I'm not upgrading for awhile correct? I would like to test all of this on a test server prior to doing the upgrade. What's the best way test all of this on an isolated test server (same name etc). I tried backing up the system state from an existing DC and restoring it on a test server but it fails on restart I think because it grabs all the registry and everything. I just want to simulate having all the AD and DNS stuff on it. Thanks much for all of your help. fv "Leif Pedersen [MVP]" wrote: > Hi, > > The mangled attributes piece can be run at any time before running the > adprep command. > > Leif > > "IVT" wrote in message > news:B9041177-7C6D-4E52-A93C-304BEF7CE22B@microsoft.com... > > Regarding the mangled attribute doc. Hi, You can fix the mangled attributes now and wait with the adprep for several months / years if you so desire. It should be possible to make a disaster recovery setup of a domain controller in a closed test network. There might however be a problem getting the domain controller role to work - see if this helps: http://groups.google.dk/group/microsoft.public.windows.server.active_directory/browse_thread/thread/4f33cb700c2bb30c/3732859221d35cb1?lnk=st&q=restore+single+domain+controller+windows&rnum=3&hl=da#3732859221d35cb1 Leif "IVT" wrote in message news:6A9AC6A0-AE53-4D2C-A408-605E929AB855@microsoft.com... > So I can run that on the server now even though I'm not upgrading for > awhile > correct? > I would like to test all of this on a test server prior to doing the > upgrade.
