Done.
[See thread "GAL? What GAL?" for full scenario]
I finally managed to get that server up and running (and, of course, I
totally deleted it as soon as all mailboxes were exported).
To any interested people, here's (basically) what I did.
- Applied SP1 to main DC/DNS/GC; this made it correctly resolve Internet
names.
- Cleaned up AD by manually (NTDSUTIL) removing any not-existing-anymore
DCs.
- For each remaining server (including Exchange):
- Configured the server to use internal DNS onstead of external one
- Applied SP1
- Demoted to member server
- Removed server entry from AD Sites and Services
- Added another DC/DNS/GC
- Configured all servers to use both DNSs
At this stage, the AD was cleaned and the two DCs were properly replicating.
Now, for the Exchange part:
- Applied SP1
- Re-ran setup /forestprep
- Re-run setup /domainprep
- Re-created domain RUS (there was only the enterprise one, I don't know if
it disappeared on its own or was deleted)
- Forced full RUS rebuild
Now I was finally able to log in using Outlook; I used it to export all
mailboxes to PSTs (there were only 12, so it was simpler than setting up
ExMerge).
Uninstallation part:
- Deleted all mailboxes
- Removed Exchange attributes from all users
- Uninstalled Exchange from the server
- Deleted the organization container from AD Sites and Services (it was
still there, even if setup said it would have been removed). Actually, I
deleted the whole "Exchange" container.
Quite a shocking experience :-)
Little question: is there anything more that I need to do in order to fully
clean AD of the old Exchange organization? I'd like to not have anything
lingering around when re-installing it from scratch.
Thanks for your time, I hope someone can learn from this. I sure had a full
course in how to *not* manage an AD domain ;-)
