Re: Migrating Exchange between two different Companies
We had a similiar setup, but Exmerge worked great for me. I will try to
detail how I used it.
Company A - Exchange 2003 with a 2000 domain running in Mixed Mode.
Company B - Exchange 2000 with a 2000 domain running in Native Mode.
Used Exmerge to pull all the data from Company B. Once complete, I had
approximately 67 PST files to import into Company A. This was setup one. As
an FYI, I had to burn the PST to DVD, as this was coming from a completely
separate Network/Domain.
Step 2 - Create all the new users, on the Company A domain. This includes
creating their Exchange boxes, email addresses, etc.
Step 3 - Rename the PST files from Company B, to match the new Login Names
on Company A. Company A had an 8 character restriction on the login name,
which translates to the PST file. For instance - if I have a user called
jdoe, when I run Exmerge, it creates a PST called jdoe.pst.
Step 4 - run Exmerge, select the mailboxes I want, point to the location of
the PST, and merge.
It should be as simple as that. Exmerge does not care about separate
environments, rights, etc. If the mailbox is there, and it has a PST file
that matches the mailbox name, it imports.
If you had problems, check your ExMerge log. You may need to modify rights
on the Exchange Server. If I remember correctly, Domain Admins, or the
Administrator account needs to have full access to all mailboxes, for Exmerge
to run properly. I had a document on this, but can't find it...however, if
you look at your ExMerge log, and google the error message, you will find the
answer...that is if your Exmerge isn't running.
Other then that, it should work fine. I have done 4 email migrations now,
using this tool, and it works great.
