Hi, I currently have a situation where due to major hardware problems my exchange server is down. I wanted to allow users to send and receive mails while I work on the recovery of the old server which I believe will be taking some time due to corrupted backup etc... Has anyone ever tried to install a second Exchange 2000 server in an organization (under a different organization name) that already had an Exchange server? I hoping that there isn't any major AD implications which would prevent the new "temporary" Exchange to perform its duties... can anyone confirm? Thanks Kailash
Hi, You won't be able to install a secondary exchange server under a new organization name. You can only host one exchange organization in one active directory forest. Why don't you install the new server with the same name as the original server? Doing this means that you won't have to redirect Outlook clients. You won't have to delete and recreate exchange attributes for the user accounts. And when you have recovered the old mailboxes you just import these into the new mailboxes using exmerge. Thanks Leif, The "old" exchange server was also a domain controller and I was thinking to try to implement the new one as a member server only. I did find a solution (though not the best probably) for the problem. I carried our an update /removeorg on the root dc and re-installed exchange on the temp server with the same organization name. I did have to delete all exchange attributes for previous email users and then I used a prf file to modify configuration on Oulook clients to redirect them. I was thinking that once I retrieve the backups, I'll implement a new exchange server where all the mails will be moved and merged back with the older mails (using exmerge).
