AD2003 Upgrade and Exchange considerations???
We are planning to install a new 2003AD infrastructure and migrate our users
to it in stages (new forest and all). We have an Exchange 2000 server that I
want to then upgrade to 2003. Can we do an "in place" upgrade of Exchange or
do we have to purchase a new server, install Exchange 2003 in the new AD
environment and then migrate the users to the new box. I'm trying NOT to buy
an additional server if I don't have to.

You can't move an Exchange server to a different forest; you could do an in
place upgrade if you were upgrading your existing domain.
Why are you not doing this?

We aren't performing an upgrade to our current AD environment because this
one is poor at best. There are many legacy issues that I don't want to come
over in the new environment. So I guess I am going to have to purchase one
more server than what I really need to. Thanks for the response.

Well, you don't *strictly* need a new server for this; even if the workload
is great, as long as you need only a temporary server for the migration you
can do it with a spare machine (maybe with a couple of mirrored disks just
for safety purposes). When the old one will be empty, you can install
Exchange on it and move all the mailboxes back. Or, and this is even best an
option, you can add this machine as an Exchange server in the old domain,
freeing the old server for installing it in the new one.
Of course, these suggestions are invalid if your users are going to actually
*work* on both servers at the same time.
