Exhcange SERVER 2003- and SPAM
I have the latest updated Exchange 2003 currently running on my Server, Over
the last coupleof month (or years) we have been experiencing lots of spam and
very bad explicite e-mails. Is there anything currently built into Exchange
that would stop these e-mails at the door. I want to first investigate the
current solution and if not then go out and buy somthing.

http://technet.microsoft.com/exchange/bb288484.aspx is the link to the
Intelligent Message Filter. It's not going to block everything but
it's a perfectly acceptable place to start.

Mark i have the IMF in place....I haven;t updated it in a while do you think
that would help? If so can you send me the link to the updates. The thing its
not filtering are the bad words "Penis" and stuff like that. How can i stop
those e-mails from coming over?

Hmmm. Bad word? Depends entirely on the context. For example, if you were
running a urologist's network, I bet they'd be annoyed if the IMF blocked
all mail containing that word. Simple keyword blocking is probably the most
primitive method of spam prevention there is, and it's a poor one - avoid
it.

http://www.petri.co.il/installing_imf_with_exchange_2003_sp2.htm may help
you - but if you find this is not doing what you need, consider outsourcing
your spam filtering to another company - check out www.mailfoundry.com for
my personal favorite these days.

At my age I need all the adverts for V1agra I can get. Best not tell
you-know-who though, eh.

Re: Exhcange SERVER 2003- and SPAM
- IMF v2 has a Custom Weighting feature that allows you to check for
keywords and increase/decrease SCL based on those. It uses an xml file for
configuration. Check SP2 release notes for the syntax.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/b/5/fb5c54af-fe5c-48e9-be97-f9e8207325ab/Ex_2003_SP2_RelNotes.htm

Also make sure the xml is saved in the correct format.
 Troubleshooting IMF: Important performance counter
http://exchangepedia.com/blog/2006/02/troubleshooting-imf-important_12.html

- As Lanwench said, that's not necessarily the best approach, but imo that's
necessary at times to accomplish the desired results (as also
whitelisting/blacklisting of email addresses and domains) when the automated
filtering doesn't seem to be doing its job.

Re: Exhcange SERVER 2003- and SPAM
If you are not satisfied IMF you can look at filtering service such as Spam
Soap, Message Labs or Microsofts Hosted Filtering Service. All are good
choices.

<chimes in>

Or Mailfoundry or Postini (I've been happy with both; tend to prefer
Mailfoundry).
