ESEUTIL
Hi Guys,

I have a bit of tough one (maybe).

Hi IT gurus,

Someone installed Exchange server in to a friend's company some time ago.

Normally as you know, the exchange mailboxes would be priv1.edb and
priv1.stm, and the public folders would be pub1.edb and pub1.stm.

For some strange reason, the exchange mailboxes are located in pub1.edb and
priv1.stm. Exchange works perfectly and System Manager agrees with the files
by checking in the properties of the mailbox store for the database file
locations.

If I go to the properties of the public folders store, according to the
database locations, it is pointing to pub1.edb and pub1.stm.

If I go to the database file location folder, I only see two files, pub1.edb
and priv1.stm (the files set up for the exchange mailboxes). This would
appear then that the pub1.edb is being used by the exchange store and the
public folder store, and that whilst the exchange store has a streaming file
(.stm), the public folders store doesn't as there is no pub1.stm file in the
folder.

This is a bit worrying on two counts. The files are not correctly named (not
such an issue because it all works), but also the public folders database
would appear to be sharing the same database as the exchange mailboxes
database (pub1.edb).

Bottom line is, how do I get around this. I can't simply rename pub1.edb to
priv1.edb (after dismounting the mailbox store) because when I try and point
the location to the new file name it states "file already exists" as if it
wants to overwrite it. I have actually tried this but the location setting
simply reverts back to pub1.edb again so I can't change it.

Can anyone advise on the best way forward?

Does this mean that public folders are being written to the same file? If
so, why is there no streaming file (pub1.stm) created for the public folders
even though that is what is set in the properties, database settings in
System Manager? There are only about four shared calenders in public folders
so no major drama is I had to loose them.

My goal is to end up with the four standard files, priv1.edb and stm for the
exchange store, and pub1.edb and stm for the public folders store.

Thanks, and sorry it's long winded, I needed to explain it as thoroughly as
possible.

The file names simply don't matter. OK, you've got them named wrong
and somewhere on your server you have two files called pub1.edb but
unless you have enough space somewhere to move the edb file you don't
need to do anything about it.

And you do need to double check the file paths. I'm sure you'll find
the file paths different even if the name is the same.

Re: ESEUTIL
Thanks for your reply Mark, but sorry I think you misunderstand. Both stores
are using the same edb file. There is only one edb file on the server in the
location specified, but both stores (public folders and exchange mailbox) are
pointing to the same file.

I could simply move the file for the exchange mailbox to a new location and
call it priv1.edb at the same time and then move it back again, but in doing
so the public folder would still be referenced to the pub1.edb and would
therefore no longer exist.

This is Exchange 2003 STD SP2 by the way, running on Windows 2003 Server STD.

To summarise:

Exchange database path in System Manager is set as:
d:\exchsrvr\database\pub1.edb
d:\exchsrvr\database\priv1.stm

Public folders database path in System Manager is set as:
d:\exchsrvr\database\pub1.edb
d:\exchsrvr\database\pub1.stm

In the location os d:\exchsrvr\database\ there are two files. pub1.edb and
priv1.stm. The size of pub1.edb is 32 gig (after a defrag) and the size of
priv1.stm is 11 gig.

Re: ESEUTIL
Just create a new mail store and move the users there. Delete the old files
and restart the store service. This will create the new files for you that
you need.

It's 2003 standard so you can't create a new store. Dave forgot to put
his spectacles on.

See, now I'm not saying I don't believe you but, err, I don't believe
you about the pub1.edb being the same file in the same location.
Any chance you could email me the screen prints of the Database tab on
the store properties of both? There is no sensitive information on
those tabs and you would be helping out greatly. mark@mvps.org is a
valid address :-)
