Re: My PST
Hi Ben,

We do have regular backup, but usually we exclude the PST files from daily
backups to speed up the backup process and we back them on a monthly bases,
So the latest backup I have is 12 days back.

Re: My PST
Aloha Othman,

Hmm...well if the PST file is zero bytes on the drive I don't think you have
many options. Probably not a good time to mention that Microsoft doesn't
support the configuration of running Outlook against a PST file stored on
a network server.

Re: My PST
First off, I don't think you have much of an option other than to lose
12 days of mail.

Why are you using PST files for recent e-mails? As Ben indicates, MS
discourages this, and for good reason. I discourage use of them even if
the PST file is on a local drive. I lost (as you did) mail a long time
ago. I now only use PST files for "archiving" e-mails that are older
than 6 months to keep the mailbox size down..

What is your backup process? How big are your PST files? I'm surprised
that backing them up has a big impact on your backup time. I've found
that large PST files are very subject to corruption, even if on a local
drive.

We use Veritas Backup Exec with a tape drive for backups. We do a full
backup every day at 3AM that backs up *everything*, including PST files.
I have another incremental backup that runs at 11PM and 7AM that backs
up the PST files. Another incremental job runs at 11AM, 3PM and 7PM that
excludes all PST files since they are usually open and thus can't e
backed up...

If you and others insist on continuing the use of PST files for active
e-mails, than you *must* back them up at least daily....

Regards,
Hank Arnold

Re: My PST
Thanks Hank for your comments,

We don't use PST file for the active mailboxes, but those PST file have been
created by our users and some users they have big e-mail sizes in theirs
inbox and start using the PST for new specific coming emails.

Regarding our backup process, We have HP MSL6060 Library and we use HP
Dataprotector Software 5.1 , we do have special exchange backup for all
mailboxes but our issue is with file based backed which include PST files in
the share folders were our management decided to backup them on monthly
bases only. Most of these PST are opened all the time ( users don't shutdown
their PC and programmers after the work ) so the backup will become slow .

That's not a good idea. See
http://www.exchangefaq.org/faq/Exchange-5.5/Why-PST-=-BAD-/q/Why-PST-=-BAD/qid/1209
for some reasons why. If the mail is important, it belongs in the mailbox or
public folders. The users can detach the file attachments, and store them in
the file server, you know....and still keep the message itself.

Management needs to know that storing PST files on the server and accessing
them across the LAN/WAN is unsupported. It will cause problems. Don't do it.
