Help with restore (Legato Networker)
I'm in need of restoring a backup of an Exchange 5.5 server , which was done
using Legato Networker Module for Exchange. The backup went fine, the right
tapes are in the library and are readable, the Networker server is up and
running (still doing backups for other servers), but I'm encountering a
really strange problem. If anyone here can be of any help with this
software, with which I'm not quite experienced (and my customer who's using
it doesn't know it any more than me), I'd be really grateful.

The Exchange 5.5 server is installed on Windows NT 4.0, and is member of a
NT domain; it has been in service for some years, always doing backups with
that software. It has SP4 installed, the OS is SP6a with all latest patches
and the Legato Networker Module version is 2.0.6. The private store size is
8 GB, the public store is 70 MB and the directory database is 4 MB (not a
lot of users on this server, but quite a bunch of e-mails).

We're in the process of moving Exchange to new hardware (that was my
consulting role), using Windows 2000 on the new server. I tried and tested
the procedure for doing this (Q155216) in a test environment (VMWare) and
everything worked fine, but, when doing it for real, database corruption got
involved; priv.edb doesn't work anymore, while the directory database and
the public folder store are ok.

The latest full backup was done a week ago, followed by incremental backups;
circular logging is disabled, so I also have the transaction logs up to the
moment the old server was shut down. I first tried to restore Exchange on
the old server: I stopped all services, made a copy of all the remaining
files, started the System Attendant and launched a full restore using the
Legato Networker User for Exchange, asking to restore the whole Exchange
(including directory and public folders), beginning with the last full
backup and adding all the incrementals.

Everything went fine for the directory database, but then the restore
stopped when the information store restore begun. The Legato client only
said "restoring information store" (no errors, no crashes, just waiting),
while on the Legato Networker Administrator console I could see the Legato
server doing... nothing. No tape was loaded or even asked for (like it was
with the directory db), only a "srvexchg:MSEXCH: browsing" ("srvexchg" is
the server name) event was logged in the monitor. It stayed there for a
while, we was wondering if it was actually doing anything, but it didn't
seem to, so we stopped it.

At this point the directory database was recovered, so I ran ESEUTIL to
apply the transaction logs (from the backups and from the server)and brought
it online. It started ok.

Then I tried again running the recovery, this time only for the information
store databases, but again from the last full backup to the latest
incremental one. Same behaviour: it just stayed there, waiting for
no-one-knows what. We waited for two hours (!), but still nothing happened.
CPU usage was zero on the Exchange server and on the Legato server itself,
so again we concluded it had stalled and closed it.

We tried restoring only the last full backup (no incrementals), but nothing
changed. We tried restoring only the private store backups (all of them the
first time, only the last full one later), but nothing changed again. We
also tried restoring only the public folder store, which is significantly
smaller in size, but it stalled again.

As a last attempt, I installed Legato Networker Module for Exchange (same
version) on the new server, which has the same hostname and IP address as
the old one, and tried to run the (full) restore directly on it, in the hope
that with Windows 2000 things could go better. They didn't. The program
didn't give any error, it found the backups and the recovery started (which
is good, maybe we can restore directly on the new server), but it stalled
this time too.

I don't know what to do more. I don't know why the directory database
restore worked and the information store one stalls this way. I don't know
what that piece of crap of a software is waiting for, since it doesn't give
any message at all. The only message appearing on the Administrator monitor
is that "srvrexchg:MSEXCH: browsing".

Tomorrow we'll try to call the vendor's support, but I'd be really glad if
someone can help.

Thanks

Any answer, please?
No luck today, too :-(

Re: Help with restore (Legato Networker)
I think the problem here might be your reluctance to move away from
several unsupported systems onto one that is supported.
I bet that not even Legato will support you much?

I think that your customer really ought to move on with their life and
spend a little cash to update themselves.

I *totally* agree with you.
But I'm not the one who's taking decisions, here... the customer is a big
Italian government agency which still has NT 4.0 on 90% of its desktops (and
servers...), and doesn't want to spend money on *anything*. With the
exception of managers' salaries, of course.

Re: Help with restore (Legato Networker)
As Mark pointed out your support options are very limited.
Maybe you could get one of the managers to buy you PowerControls from
Ontrack? Then you could do a Dial Tone recovery of the Exchange server.
This will get the users up and running with blank mailboxes and you can work
on getting the data out of the edb file that you have.

Solved: the Legato Networker server needed to be upgraded to the latest
version.
I had said it the first day, but nobody wanted to do it :-/

Thanks anyway :-)
