SMTP Gateway Hardware
What are the best server hardware configurations for a SMTP Gateway running
windows Server 2003 enterprise and Exchange 2003 enterprise? We are
currently running windows server 2000 sp4 with 1 gig ram and exchange 2000
enterprise and will be replacing that server with a new box.

Re: SMTP Gateway Hardware
What is this gateway going to do?
Do you have one user or 100,000?
How much mail do you process?
What are your needs / requirements?

If you are just passing mail, a Windows 2003 server with IIS / SMTP service
will do just fine.

Re: SMTP Gateway Hardware
The gateway will receive all mail from off site spam (postini) the route to
our servers, we have approximately 2500 users and will also be using Symantec
AV

Re: SMTP Gateway Hardware
Another question, is there a best practice white paper on building a smtp
gateway server?

Re: SMTP Gateway Hardware
To be honest with you Nelo, I'm a little confused.
Are you going to run Symantec AV on the gateway, or is all it is doing is
receiving mail and passing it on?
I imagine with 2500 users, you must process a lot of mail. Do you plan to
only use 1 gateway?
What are you using / doing now?

Everyone here is happy to help you, but when posting, providing details are
important.

Re: SMTP Gateway Hardware
Sorry about that, we will be running the Symantec AV on that server and it
will be the only SMTP gateway passing mail, we are averaging 75000 pieces of
mail per day. We are currently running one SMTP gateway on windows 2000
server and exchange 2000 enterprise and that machine is also using Symantec
AV.
