Exchange 2003 Disaster Recovery
My question is fairly simple.

What I have:
A full backup of the Exchange Server 2003 SP2 database made with NT Backup
The NetBIOS name of the server
The NT Domain name
The list of the users with mailboxes (domain name and friendly name of the
users)
A new server freshly installed in a WORKGROUP

What I do not have anymore:
The machine on which Exchange Server was installed on
The domain (no DC with AD anymore)

My question is:

++ Is it possible to restore the Exchange functionalities on the new server
++ Is it possible at least to extract the content of the mailboxes (with
ExMerge for example) even if it takes time

All of this is for testing purpose.

Help appreciated.
Nicolas

You could install into a forest lab AD ( not a workgroup) environment
and if the org, admin group etc match, it should mount then connect
mailboxes to AD accounts.

Might want to simply purchase 3rd party recovery software from Quest
or Ontrack and extract the mailboxes that way.

NICOLAS: I did that. Everything works fine: I can mount the database; I can
see the mailboxes with the red cross. However I was unable to reconnect any
mailbox, either on a new user created in the AD, or on a user with same name
that I created from scratch in the AD (there is a "conflict"). I am not that
good at playing with the Exchange attributes and ADSI Edit or LDIF, so I
didn't go further. ExMerge doesn't work either; it just creates a tiny PST
file.
So, am I missing something? Is it worth to work on this some more time?

NICOLAS: Yes. Ontrack PowerControls 5.0 looks fine (at least with trial
version). I may go in this direction if the licensing is affordable. I am
responsible for the maintenance and support of five Exchange Servers
(Exchange Server 2003 SP2 or Exchange Server 2007 SP1 running on these
servers).
