EX2K3 OMA vs Active Sync
Hello.

We just implemented our new Exchange 2003
server in our local Domain. I want to hear some
users in this newsgroup if it is a difficult task
to implement OMA or Active Sync.

The big guys in our company wants to purchase
smart Phone/PDAs to be able to send/receive
email wherever they are.

Questions: Do I enable both OMA and Active
Sync? What cellular carrier and/or phone
do you recommend? Do I need to add
third party software on top of EX2K3 to
accomplish mobility?

Thanks in advance.

Just do with ActiveSync. OMA is only for live and online access to
email through a text base browser. If you enable users for mobile
access you will get both active anyway. Don't tell them about OMA
because it's not much good.

Re: EX2K3 OMA vs Active Sync
Either will work but I much prefer Active Sync over OMA. You can sync your
entire Mailbox with the Mobile Device. In addtion, with Direct Push and
Message and Security Feature Pack your WM 5 device will sync realtime. No
need to install any additional software as Exchange 2003 includes everything
you need. I prefer Verizon with Treo 700w as the mobile device.

Re: EX2K3 OMA vs Active Sync
Thank you for your advise.

Do I need to have SSL with Active sync?

Re: EX2K3 OMA vs Active Sync
John,
We are still in the test mode with Direct Push. We have it working, but I
haven't found an easy way to verify who is using it. I've installed the
MobileAdmin application and see where I can wipe devices and view transaction
logs, but nothing about just seeing who is synchronizing with Exchange using
Direct Push. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: EX2K3 OMA vs Active Sync
Sure thing, see if this helps. I found this to be very helpful in
monitoring Activesync connections.

Re: EX2K3 OMA vs Active Sync
Thanks a lot, John. I've been using log parser to parse the Exchange
transaction logs for several months. It's a great tool. I think the article
you sent me is just what I'm looking for. I'll let you know if I have any
problems with it.
