#5.5.0 smtp;500 Line too long
Hi,

I first noticed this with a user sending emails from a VISTA / Office 2007
PC. The emails were being bounced back and there was no clear cause. In
that instance the user recreated the message (as opposed to "replying to
all"), resent it and it worked. As it seemed to go away I forgot about it.
I have now been told that someone trying to send a message to us has
received the same or similar NDR bounce back. I am now thinking that it is
more than likely something to do with our Exchange Server 2003 SE SP2
server. I know about the RFC 1000 limit but how do you control it, as in
how to allow for a little more, and how do you configure the SMTP server to
always limit the number of characters in the DATA command to 1000? I know
you can use SMTP extensions but so far as I can tell this is tobe avoided.

Is this perhaps an Outlook 2007 problem? I am not sure if the sender who is
having trouble getting emails to us is on Outlook 2007, but I know my user
who was receiving this bounce backs in the past was.

TIA,

Jarryd

Re: #5.5.0 smtp;500 Line too long
The RFC would apply only if you are using IMAP or POP with SMTP to send the
message.

Please post the complete NDR and describe precisely what the user is doing,
what the user sees, and how Outlook is configured.

Re: #5.5.0 smtp;500 Line too long
Dear Ed,

It is hard for me to tell you what the users are doing. That is because it is nothing out of the ordinary and there is no real obvious pattern. I don't believe that this is always a FW: or a RE: or a resend of a message. It just happens randomly.

Outlook is configured as a MAPI client connected to Exchanged 2003.

I don't know what else to tell you.

Regards,

Jarryd

Re: #5.5.0 smtp;500 Line too long
Is abc.com an Internet domain to which your users are sending mail? If so, is there any SMTP host or SMTP inspection device (like some of those provided by some firewalls) between your Exchange server and the Internet domain? Is it always the same domain doing the bouncing?

Re: #5.5.0 smtp;500 Line too long
Hi Ed,

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. a.b.c is not a real domain. I always try to fudge the real ones cos I am paranoid.

The is s a Watchguard firewall in between us and the internet. Incoming mail is protected by an SMTP proxy on the firewall, and outgoing messages are only protected by a packet filter.

I have looked into this with WG and no real solution.

Anyway, as it looks to be a real needle in a haystack and no-one is complaining about it anymore I'll leave it till it gets serious.

Regards,

Charles
