SMTP Queues "hang" intermittently
I have a problem at one of my accounts that has me stumped. Occasionally
(and recently more oftent) SMTP queues for a particular receiving domain
will just hang. And they will stay that way for days and more. Sometimes
stopping/starting the information store will clear one or more of them, but
perhaps not all. Sometimes running eseutil might free things up. But there
doesn't seem to be any consistency. One day, each time I stopped/started
the exchange services, a queue would clear. But then I had to do it again
until another one cleared.

Once they are all cleared, they might run fine for a good while; but then it
happens again. This is really frustrating for me and even more so for my
client.

I can see nothing in the event log that might indicate what is happening. I
have SMTP logging turned on but not really sure what to look for there to
see what might be causing this.

When it happens it is not all email. Some domains go through just fine.
But when the queue for a domain gets stuck, all email for that queue is
stuck.

Please; is this something that there is a know reason for and is there a
fix. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

One thing to add here is that if I look at the Queue folder in windows
explorer, there is nothing there.

Re: SMTP Queues "hang" intermittently
Bob,

I feel compelled to ask...did you ever resolve the rerouting problem you
were having earlier? If not, that is the second exchange issue (presumably
unrelated) in less than a week. That would lead me to believe that your
exchange install is somehow very damaged (settings or corrupt...take your
pick.) Either way, if you haven't resolved the routing issue yet, it sounds
like it might be time to back up the IS, flatten, and reinstall...making
sure all service packs take.

Re: SMTP Queues "hang" intermittently
Gee, thanks for remembering Cliff.

Actually the other issue looks to be fixed; am doing some testing before
saying for sure and then will post.

This is something different and on a different server (customer)

Re: SMTP Queues "hang" intermittently
What is the status of the queue listed as when it hangs?

Re: SMTP Queues "hang" intermittently
I'm sorry to take so long to reply here. I tried a couple of times with an
attachment but perhaps they are not allowed on the board. So I will try
typing in the essence of the screen shot from Message Tracking.

First though, to answer your question, of course I have the queues cleared
now,and have been all day, but it seems to me that some were scheduled, some
were queued, and some were retry if those statuses sound right.

The following is the information from a screen shot from message tracking
for one of the stuck the messages that was in one of the queues. They just
seem to keep trying but nothing happens.

5/5/2008 11:42 PM SMTP: Non-Delivered Report (NDR) Generated

I believe that the NDR at the end might have been my doing because that is
about the time I was working on things. But I had other messages in
different queues that had just as long or longer message tracking entries
just like this one.

There was one however that had a rather strange last line. After the
"Message Routed and Queued for Remote Deliver" entry, the next line was the
standard "Started Outbound Transfer of Message", but the following line
looked a bit corrupt: "Message transfered to
*************2*******************........" rather than listing the mail
server"

If there is something that could be more useful let me know and I will post
it. Tomorrow I hope I have time to look at the SMTP logs for those days
although I haven't really got the jist of how to read everything in them.

Again, thanks.
