Restoring Information Store to an Alternate location
Hi,

We have Exchange Server 2003 and I am testing out NTBackup utility's restore
operation for the Information Store. I have the location of the backup file
and I would like to restore to the same database server, but not to the
original production location and I can leave the mount database after restore
unchecked. My goal is to restore Exchange's database files without disrupting
the production database itself. Instead, I would like to restore to an
alternate location ie D:\ExchSvr\InfoStore instead of its original location
ie C:\ExchSvr\InfoStore. If I proceed with the restore using NT Backup
utility, will I be able to do that? Just want to be safe this is what's going
to happen. Any suggestions and/or comments greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This what recovery storage groups are for.

This is a great way to test your backups without interfering with Exchange.

RE: Restoring Information Store to an Alternate location
Thanks for the info. RSG is probably a project I can get into next, but at
the very minimum, I just want to restore Exchange database files to another
folder location on the same server from the original NTBackup .bkf file.
When this happens, just want to be safe that these restored files doesn't
take the place and overwrite the current production files. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
