Will Exchange 2007 help with delays
Were having problems with delays in our email. I thought it was the UDP
being blocked by the firewall.

It is the infamous RDP pop up that says “Please wait, downloading data from
the exchange server”. This is not an external email delivery issue. This is
an issue of accessing my own outlook folders, subfolders, and other internal
user mailboxes.

When we shift from one outlook folder to another and especially if it is
another user’s mailbox, there is a delay of sometimes minutes before the
information in the folder (emails, contacts, calendar items) are displayed.
Accompanying this is the RDP pop up.

We first implemented an EMC SAN to try to resolve this problem several
years ago and it helped but did not eliminate the issue. It has gotten
progressively worse over the years. Metrics on the exchange server show low
DISK queue lengths, and CPU utilization is normally in the single digits.
Thus I believe that the issue is related to the constraint that exchange 2003
has on the number of threads that it will process- I think the limit is one
thousand or so. That means that even if there is enough CPU horsepower the
exchange 2003 software won’t make use of it and the user experience is the
delay they experience. What I need to know is if exchange 2007 will solve
this problem. Thx

Re: Will Exchange 2007 help with delays
First thing I would try is downloading and running ExBPA against your
Exchange box to see if it can come up with anything. Next thing I would run
is DCDIAG and NETDIAG to see if it throws any errors.

Re: Will Exchange 2007 help with delays
Thanks John

Also in moving forward what features in the new Exchange would eliminate
this issue. At the moment we are looking into moving to the new Exchange but
want to make sure when we do we do not run up against the same issue. Thanks

Re: Will Exchange 2007 help with delays
You are obviously monitoring your Disk Counters using PerfMon - can I ask
you paste them here?

Also - how many users is this Exchange 2003 mailbox server on EMC Clariion
SAN supporting? What are the specifications and what is your concurrency
percentage?

Have you ruled out network issues?

Ideally more information is needed, is the Exchange Server in the same site
as the users for example?

Re: Will Exchange 2007 help with delays
For the existing server here are the recommendations...

I would try is downloading and running ExBPA against your
Exchange box to see if it can come up with anything. Next thing I would run
is DCDIAG and NETDIAG to see if it throws any errors.

We are doing this now with Microsoft’s help

When I asked whether the new Exchange would eliminate the problem completly
this is what I got back...

Are you monitoring your Disk Counters using PerfMon - can I ask
you paste them here?

Disk queue length is less than 5 for both DAS and SAN disks

Also - how many users is this Exchange 2003 mailbox server on EMC Clariion
SAN supporting? What are the specifications and what is your concurrency
percentage?

90 users

Have you ruled out network issues?
we don’t believe this to be a network issue.

Ideally more information is needed, is the Exchange Server in the same site
as the users for example?

We only have one site and we have a flat network

Re: Will Exchange 2007 help with delays
Microsoft does not support removing Exchange 2007 manually so my best advice
would either restore from backup previous to the uninstall or give Microsoft
PSS a call. If this was a lab environment I would say try removing the
Exchange System Objects container using ADSI edit but would not recommend it
in a production environment.
