Are there any performance advantages to having multiple information stores on an Exchange 2003 Server? We were thinking about branching out each department into its own info store to break out brick level backups and to minimize down time when we do offline defrags. Would multiple info stores help? Are there any issues? Thanks.

The biggest advantage is quicker backup and restore times of the individual stores. Obviously its easier to restore one 30 GB store than a whole 300 GB one. Its also easier to configure different mailbox limits, etc. As for BLB's why bother? Recovery Storage Groups are your friend. In addition to backup and restore advantages, by starting with 4 SGs and leveling the stores across the SGs, you minimize contention for the log files. As far as offline defrags are concerned, why are you doing them? In an Exchange server enterprise environment there is no point; you do more harm than good. offline defrag is a repair process and was never intended to be part of regular maintenance.
