Pros:
1. External mailers do not connect directly with your Exchange Server
2. You can make changes, reboot, apply updates to the Exch Server or ,
move to a new Exch server etc... and your domain continues to accept
mail.
3. Allows you to do AV and Anti-Spam, recipient filtering etc.. at
the gateway, a good thing.
4. Performance - if your domain is hit with mail storm,and other mail
issues from the Internet, you can deal with it at the gateway level
rather than the Exch Server level.
Cons: Not many. Servers are cheap. I would keep a SMTP gateway for
inbound mail.
