SMTP Gatway Server
Can any one tell me what is the pros & cons of having SMTP Gatway Server.

We are a small company with less than 15 users and the enviroment I have as
follow

Firewall ---> ISA ---> SMTP Gatway ----> Exchange 2003

I am interested to remove the SMTP Gateway and I recognized that the SMTP
virtual server on the SMTP Gateway server I would like to use the server for
something else but I am not sure if this is the right thing to do. will
this make any performance issues.

If it is good to remove the SMTP what is the steps to do on the Exchange
side and ISA side

Re: SMTP Gatway Server
Is your SMTP gateway doing anything else other than being a gateway? (AV,
spam etc)

Pros:

1. External mailers do not connect directly with your Exchange Server
2. You can make changes, reboot, apply updates to the Exch Server or ,
move to a new Exch server etc... and your domain continues to accept
mail.
3. Allows you to do AV and Anti-Spam, recipient filtering etc.. at
the gateway, a good thing.
4. Performance - if your domain is hit with mail storm, and other mail
issues from the Internet, you can deal with it at the gateway level
rather than the Exch Server level.

Cons: Not many. Servers are cheap. I would keep a SMTP gateway for
inbound mail.
