Exchange 2007 CAS design / install
I am planning the transition of our current Exchange 2003 FE/BE organization
to 2007. I know that the first server I need to introduce into the existing
organization is the 2007 CAS role, which will be a standalone role on its own
hardware. However I am a little confused on when I MUST decomission the 2003
front-end. Currently our FE server sits in the DMZ, however in the new 2007
design I would like to introduce ISA 2006 to our environment and publish all
the CAS services via ISA. So my question(s) are this...

1. Once the installation of 2007 CAS role has been completed, can I take my
time and test the configuration of ISA handling requests for the CAS withouth
interupting the usage of OWA on the current FE server?

2. At what point will end users be impacted when access OWA if I have both
the 2003 FE and 2007 CAS existing in the organization?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Re: Exchange 2007 CAS design / install
I can answer the first question, which in our live environment we have got
our CAS servers set up and the old owa 2003 still switched on and users are
still going thourgh that at the momemt. They could use the owa 2007 and that
would let them in as well but we are not ready for them yet.

So the asnwers to your question is yes you can take your time and get it all
sorted first.

I think for the 2nd question they would only be impacted once you switch off
the 2003 owa and redirect to the new 2007 but I could be wrong, dont thin I
am though.

Hope that helps.

Re: Exchange 2007 CAS design / install
Robin --

Thanks for the info. How are you planning on "switching" all your users from
OWA in 03 to OWA in 07? Are you testing the the OWA in 07 using a differet
publicly resolvable name? I understand that the CAS can answer for mailboxes
that reside on a 2003 server but my question is how do you plan on making the
cutover from the 03 front-end to the 07 cas?

Thanks,

Chris

Re: Exchange 2007 CAS design / install
Not sure yet, my PM has the answer to that one and I haven't got there yet.

we are doing our testing from a different address i.e. owa2007.domain.com as
opposed to owa2003.domain.com

The cas does answer for mailboxes that as still in 03 but the user needs to
hit the /exchange folder in IIS not the /owa folder

we will probably simply do a DNS change to make people move, however I am
not 100% if thats what we are going to do.

Re: Exchange 2007 CAS design / install
Robin -

I think that I have come up with a pretty good method for cutover, however I
am also introducing ISA into the environment. So for testing I am going to be
hitting the CAS via IS and IP vs. creating a new host record in my external
DNS. Then once testing has been done hitting the CAS with mailboxes on both
03 and 07, i will just flip flop external IP addresses so the my exsiting owa
/ rpc over http url will still work and I don't have to wait for a DNS change
to propogate. Maybe this will assist...

Thanks for the replies !

Re: Exchange 2007 CAS design / install
Chris

Thanks for that, I think we will eventually be bringing on an ISA cluster as
well.
