Can someone tell me why it is recomended to install the file share witness on the hub server? I'm looking at putting on a BlackBerry Server thatr is also running DoubleTake so that I dont need to switch the DNS entry should the primary witness also be off. I cant see why this should be a problem but I just felt the need to check.

It's because it's there - you have to have an HT/CAS on a separate box so there has to be one. > >I'm looking at putting on a BlackBerry Server thatr is also running >DoubleTake so that I dont need to switch the DNS entry should the primary >witness also be off. However, since you have to have an HT you might as well keep all the Exchange and its High availability components in the family, so to speak.

The documented reason I've seen is because the Hub Transport server falls under the responsbility of the messaging administrator who can therefore manage and monitor any outages that could occur with the FSW. Locating it on a server belonging to, say, the AD guys in a large install could pose problems when trying to monitor or manage it. -- Neil Hobson Exchange MVP http://www.msexchange.org/Neil_Hobson/
As others have stated - there are no technical reasons. The recommendation is based on operational issues and responsibilities. The Hub also hosts another piece of the High Availability puzzle - the transport dumpster. -- Bharat Suneja MVP - Exchange www.zenprise.com NEW blog location: exchangepedia.com/blog ---------------------------- "MJS500" wrote in message news:1AD4FED1-F158-46F2-903A-26CFBF9FA10C@microsoft.com... > Can someone tell me why it is recomended to install the file share witness > on > the hub server? > > I'm looking at putting on a BlackBerry Server thatr is also running > DoubleTake so that I dont need to switch the DNS entry should the primary > witness also be off. True for the big corporations but it's the easiest way of explaining it for a question where the number of servers is a handful rather than close to the number of pints you can put away of an evening.
Keep in mind if you have geographically seperated data centers then you need the FSW to be in a 3rd physical location if you want automatic cluster failovers to occur properly. Otherwise if it is located in one datacenter, you may not get the required majority of the node set to be able to make an authorative decision to being the passive node online as active.
