We have a company with 400 users (in 54 branch offices). We have installed exchange 2007. Can you recommend how many storage groups and how many mailbox databases in each I should create? I'm thinking to create 2 storage groups and about 27 mailbox databases in each storage group (one mailbox database for a branch office) Thanks.

I'd say if the users are just going to be run of the mill users, a few hundred MB per user and a couple of dozen messages per day then one or two stores is fine. Go and download the Exchange Storage Calculator and double check. It will ask you to put in mailbox sized and emails per day and other details like that.

In essence the new SG is required when you have too many users in the first store and you need a second store. Why you would need to tip to a new store is down to you and involves such factors as total users in the store or total size of the store or number of messages going through the store causing you buffer problems.
