Currently we have an old ibm server with 2 yes 2 hardrives in it windows mirrored hosting exchange for over 1000 users. There is another server with an hp storage vault that backs up this exchange server and the backups literally take 23 hours to complete. Management purchased 2 poweredge 6850's with 16 gb ram, 5 250 gb hardrives, xeon quad core 3.66 etc.... We also have a EMC NAS box with 7.5 TB of storage that is basically just sitting. I am using it for a few virtual servers but thats about all. we have about 1100 users and the mailboxes average 600mb a piece. obviously the hardrives are being overworked but surprisingly the machine has been running like this since 2004. I have been given full control to move to the new environment and design it the way i want to. i am trying to get feedback on how to design an migrate the users over to the new environment. Previously i worked in a smaller environment with about 300 users and about 200mb each, so this is a much larger environment and i dont know what i dont know about migrating this many users. My proposal: use the old server as a front end server so that the users would not have to change much (most of the users are in the field). PowerEdge 6850 #1 Windows OS mirrored on 2 drives Raid 0+1 on the remaing 3 drives (log files, and .stm files) EMC Nas (.edb files) Poweredge 6850 #2 setup some type of mirroring to this unit and run the backups off this unit so i have a activ/passive configuration and backups on tape if necessary. Any advice is appreciated...and NO i am not making any of this stuff up...i am shocked it works also..... Thanks in advance
You had an answer to some or all of this in the .setup yesterday. Can you keep your questions to one place so that people aren't answering the same thing multiple times. Now, can you go back to .setup and read the answer then ask a supplementary question if you need.
