Exchange 2007 CAS Proxying Design
Hi,

I would like to know your feedback and whether this scenario could or
couldn't work

customer has 3 AD Sites geographically dispersed.

Site 1 is connected to Internet but does not have any mailboxes - It would
have 1 CAS/HT server
Site 2 does have 1000 mailboxes - It would have 1 CAS/HT Server + 1 node of
a CCR Cluster
Site 3 does have 1000 mailboxes - It would have 1 CAS/HT Server + 1 node of
a CCR Cluster

there is a VLAN configured between Site 2 and Site 3 so CCR is possible

my question is, Can they setup just 1 CAS/HT server in site 1 (no mailbox
server) which proxies the OWA, and the other Internet services requests to
other CAS/HT in other sites and then those sending the requests to the
relevant MBX servers?

Thanks

No.
You will need a CAS in each location.
Site 1 CAS will send to Site 2 CAS and Site 2 CAS will get the
information from the Mailbox server and send it back through the CAS.

I have slide from the "Get Ready for blah blah" roadshows if you want
it and haven't been to the events in Europe.
Email me if you want it.

Re: Exchange 2007 CAS Proxying Design
Thanks Mark, would appreciate if you can send me the presentation you are
talking about

I think I was not clear in my question, so this means that if I have 3 CAS,
1 per location but just 2 MBX servers in Site 2 and Site 3 would not work?

problem here is that they have a huge Internet connection 100 Mpbs in the
smallest site and they don't want to deploy a MBX server on it

they would like to deploy a CAS in the site with the Internet connection
which proxies the user requests to the other 2 CAS servers and then those
redirect the queries to the MBX in Site 2 and 3

is this possible?

cheers

That's fine. The CAS in each location is the key. The CAS in site 1
needs to be there otherwise OWA from the Internet isn't going to work.

No probs, just go with the MBs where you want and the CAS's where I
told you. You understood just fine.
