Ok we have 4 sites and one being the data center. The other sites are all connected to the data center. We are running AD and Exchange 2003. Here is the issue all remote sites get this requesting data message. Which from what I read isn't uncommon but my concern is that in the message when they do get it. "Outlook is retrieving data from the Microsoft Exchange Server "remote1-dc.xxxx.com". You can cancel the request or minimize this message to the Windows taskbar until Outlook closes the message automatically." Here is the thing that stumps me on this message. It isn't saying the Exchange server "remote3-ex.xxxx.com" it is pointing to a Domain controller in a different location. Same happens on the other side they get the message and it points to the other domain controller in the other location. These messages are very common in the remote locations. FYI I'm new to this job and not completly familiar with the configuration.
Do you have a DC in each site? Have you properly setup your remote sites in AD Sites and Services? It sounds like you have everything in the same site and this would cause such an issue. We do have a DC at each site. As far as if they are setup correctly that I do not know yet. I do have 4 sites setup in Sites and Services. Now if they are setup correctly this I can't answer it has been so long since I have done this stuff so I will have to go back and look this up. Each subnet should be associated with a site. If a subnet is not associated with a specific site, then it's associated with the default first site. When you unexpectedly connect to a dc/gc in a remote site, then the first thing to check is site/subnet associations. If these are correct, go back to the application log on your exchange server and check the dsaccess topology discovery events. This provide an invaluable clue as to what exchange was thinking when it gave the referral to the client. These (sites and subnets) are correct but I will be sure to check this out: go back to the application log on your exchange server and check the dsaccess topology discovery events. John I don't see anything related to these types of events on the Exchange server.
