Server suddenly started rejecting email. The sender gets a response as follows: This report relates to a message you sent with the following header fields: --------- Your message cannot be delivered to the following recipients: Recipient address: user@domain Reason: Remote SMTP server has rejected address Diagnostic code: smtp;550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for user@domain Remote system: dns;mail.domain (TCP|10.10.10.81|21833|#.#.#.#|25) ---------- It is an Exchange Server 2003. It is set not to relay mail and has worked fine until now. The only way I can get it to accept mail is to modify the SMTP Virtual Server, select 'Relay' and enable it by selecting 'All except the list below' This happed after 'by mistake' connecting an old secondary controller that was removed from the network without being demoted first. It had been a few months since on-line and became 'tombstoned'. Has this caused the problem? If so, how do I fix it. I tried demoting it now and it did not work. I followed instrucitons from Microsoft on manually removing it from the AD but there has been no change in the Exchange server's behaviour. As soon as I turn off 'Relaying' it rejects ALL email.
