I have installed a new Exchange 2003 SP2 2node cluster and during failover testing I am finding the SMTP service will not go offline gracefully and always times out. I increased the time out period to give it a little more chance but this just means it takes longer to time out. I originally found an article about DEP causing this issue and now have disabled this via Boot.ini switch /noExecute=AlwaysOff. This has not changed the problem. Event logs from: MSExchangeCluster Event log 1020 SMTP Virtual server Instance 1 (servername): Failed to take this resource offline because of timeout. Event Log 1004 SMTP Virtual server Instance 1 (servername): Failed to take this resource offline. Event Log 1024 SMTP Virtual server Instance 1 (servername): Failed to stop service SMTPSVC Windows is running 2003 SP2 as well.
