I have installed a 4 server Exchange 2007 setup with 2 client access/hub servers and 2 clustered mailbox replication servers. The setup is physically split in two in the same building. My client has asked me if we could restore this setup (from tape) onto new hardware in the event of a disaster ie all 4 server were destroyed. This of course wouldn't be an problem however was wondering if anyone has tried restoring an exchange 2007 setup like this onto a single server (ie with all the roles in one place). This would mean i would only need a single standby 'warm' server rather than 4. Thanks Henry
Look into using Standby Continuous Replication (SCR) for site-wide failures/site resilience. Can use a single server with mailbox, Hub and CAS roles as a SCR target. Activating a SCR target is more efficient than restoring from tape. Tape restores should be the last possible option simply because of the time it takes. -- Bharat Suneja MVP - Exchange www.zenprise.com NEW blog location: exchangepedia.com/blog ---------------------------- "Henry" wrote in message news:F99E05FE-BA3B-4F1F-9673-8C64DD062F0F@microsoft.com... >I have installed a 4 server Exchange 2007 setup with 2 client access/hub > servers and 2 clustered mailbox replication servers. Looks good. Do you know how the licensing works for this? I guess I'll need another copy of Server 2003 enterprise. Will i need another exchange enterprise license? No. A standalone (non-clustered) SCR target can be Exchange Server 2007 SP1 Std. Edition. Be aware of the differences between how a clustered SCR target (with no CMS) is activated, and how recovery for a non-clusterd SCR target works (using Database Portability). -- Bharat Suneja MVP - Exchange www.zenprise.com NEW blog location: exchangepedia.com/blog ---------------------------- "Henry" wrote in message news:6269D3E6-ADFD-49E8-952F-727700E10233@microsoft.com... > Looks good. Please keep in mind that the Std Edition supports a maximum of 5 targets per server. So if you have more than 5 storage groups in your CCR environment, then you would need the Enterprise Edition on the SCR target computer in order to leverage SCR for all of the storage groups in the CCR environment. Also, database portability would be your only option because (1) you cannot split or merge clusters using /recoverCMS, and (2) you cannot have any other roles installed on the nodes in the CCR environment. Hope this helps. -- Regards, Scott Schnoll Microsoft Corporation This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Please do not send email directly to this alias.
