HTTP Virtual server Instance Failing
I have added a new node to an existing Exchange cluster.
Configuration: Windows server 2003 SP2, Exchange 2003 Enterprise SP2.

Issue: HTTP virtual server instance faling, WWW service is not started, IIS
shows default website stopped.

I start the WWW service manually, start the wesbite manually and then try to
briing HTTP virtual server Instance online. It fails and the service and the
website again stops.
No Event Ids generated pointing to the cause.

It was a 4 node cluster where 2 new nodes were being added. One as active
and one as passive.
I'm configuring the active node at this momemt on which HTTP virtual server
instance is not coming online.

Thanks and Regards,
Nitika

Re: HTTP Virtual server Instance Failing
So this is an A/A/P/P cluster? You say one of the new nodes you've added is
active, so you are running 2 EVS' correct?

You may have a corrupt DS2MB key (Directory Services to MetaBase).

What are the Event Logs generating? and again can you confirm this is a
second EVS within the cluster and the original has no issues.

Re: HTTP Virtual server Instance Failing
Hi Oliver,
It was initialy a 4 node4 cluster: A/A/A/P. Now we are adding two more nodes
to it : A/P
This would make it 6 node cluster: 4 A / 2 P
The 5th node that I'm talking about is the one we are adding as active node.
This would be forth Virtual server. I already have 3 running succesuflly.

No event ID that can oint this failure.

Thanks,
Nitika

Re: HTTP Virtual server Instance Failing
Hi,

Ok understood.

If the HTTP virtual server is failing it could very well be the DS2MB key
that is the issue. You can delete it using Metabase Explorer and it will be
rebuilt when you next bring the EVS online, alternatively you can enter this
regkey

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeMU\Parameters

Value Name: VerifyConsistency
Data Type: REG_WORD
Radix: Hexidecimal
Data Value: 1

Reboot.

Note, this key will rebuild the metabase everytime, so you may want to
remove it after you've implemented it, whether it fixes your issue or not.
No harm will come from having this key.

I do find it very strange there is absolutely nothing in the Event Logs -
makes it very hard to help you, is it only this node that has issues with
this EVS?

If you have no further information you may benefit from calling PSS.

Re: HTTP Virtual server Instance Failing
Hi Nitika,

Without unistalling Exchange and IIS and then re-installing again, I can't
offer anymore advice - I would call PSS
