Additional Shared IP-address for NLB ?
Hi, I've configured two Exchange2003 Front-End-servers using Windows NLB. Can
I add a second shared IP-address (in addition to the primary) for the same
NLB-cluster. In the "Cluster properties" there is "Additional cluster
IP-address "-option. For what purpose this option can be used ?

Best Regards, Djaw

You NLB the box. You can have many IP addresses as you want serving as
many services as you want. You can NLB HTTP on one address and HTTPS
on another. The world is your garlic-bread.

Re: Additional Shared IP-address for NLB ?
Thanks. Do you mean that it's possible to NLB smtp-port on the primary
shared IP-address and add another cluster IP address, using "Additional
cluster IP-address", to NLB smtp-port. I will then have servers sending
email using the Primary shared IP address and other servers will send email
using the additional shared IP-address ?

With Regards, Djaw.

Huh?
NLB has got nothing to do with users sending email. I think you might
have asked a question you didn't want an answer to.
What are you actually trying to do?

Re: Additional Shared IP-address for NLB ?
Hi Mark,

As I mentioned in the first message, I've configured two Ex2003 FE-servers
using Windows NLB. I load balanced smtp as well as http and https.

This NLB-cluster is used for OWA. External smtp-gw are configured to send
Inbound email to the NLB's shared IP-address and Inbound email is then
forwarded to BE-servers. Everything is working fine.

Can I NLB smtp using an additional shared IP-address ?
In the "Cluster properties" there is "Additional cluster
IP-address "-option. For what purpose this option can be used ?

With Regards, Dj.

Good. So this has nothing to do with the users.
Yes. You can NLB something else - smtp if you want to - on another IP
address. I can't asnwer the question as to what purpose you want to
use it because that's your decision based on some business
requirement. You have absolutley no need to use it so I don't actually
see why you're focusing on smtp.

Re: Additional Shared IP-address for NLB ?
Hi Mark,

Thanks again for your answers. I am focusing on smtp because, I've more than
fifty servers, running IIS smtp-service, which are configured to send emails
(notifications, virus-alerts, etc..) via an old Ex2K3 bridgehead server. This
bridgehead Ex2K3 server belongs to the same Exchange organization as the NLB.

I want to decommission this bridgehead server and add it's IP-address to the
NLB. As a result, these fifty servers will still sent email using the same IP
but now via the NLB.

Can I achieve this goal by adding additional shared IP-address to nlb smtp
(In the "Cluster properties" there is "Additional cluster) ?

With Regards, Djaw.

You should read Rod's blog on the topic at:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/clustering/archive/2005/08/11/62372.aspx

They key is that a Virtual IP is not a real IP. :)

Re: Additional Shared IP-address for NLB ?
Hi Russ,
Thank you for tackling this NLB issue. Definitely, the NLB-cluster shared
VirtualIP is used for Inbound traffic only. Can I add another shared
virtualIP for the NLB-cluster using NBL manager (Cluster properties \
Cluster IP Addresses-tab --> Additional cluster IP addresses) for inbound
traffic ?

Best regards, Djaw.
