KB926666 and cluster
Hello,
Is it okay to apply 926666 to a passive cluster node and then failover to
that node or do you need to apply the patch to an active node so that
Exchange is updated?
Thanks,
Dan

Re: KB926666 and cluster
Dan it not that easy. You have to answer lots of questions. Are using COM+
with Outlook, Mobile devices, XP desktops, etc. Microsoft has a site setup
at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cp_dst to answer these and even more
questions.

Pay close attention to the order of patches.

Re: KB926666 and cluster
Hey Rodney,
Thanks for the reply. I'm familiar with that site and at best I'd say it
provides a nice "executive overview".
I'm at the point where I need to figure out how to get my store version to
the noted level that will not cause issues and also install 926666 (all of my
OS patches and clients are patched). Just wondering if 926666 can be
installed on a passive node, the node rebooted and then failed over or if I
need to actually install the patch while the node is active. Any ideas?
And if you happen to know how to get my store level up to 7650.23 that would
be great. I have SP2 installed and am at a level of 7638.2. I'm guessing
there are a few patches I need to upgrade to.... and in case you haven't
seen it, that first store level is what the msexchange team site is saying we
should all be at before applying 926666 to avoid some of the pitfalls people
have seen with it.
Thanks,
Dan

Re: KB926666 and cluster
Dan,
I'll give this a shot as I recently went through the process myself...

First, the actual steps: I started on the Passive node and applied the OS
update, then the Exch2k3 SP2 update (kb926666). I then rebooted the passive
node and made sure it came up ok. I then ran Microsoft Update to get latest
security patches and let it reboot again. Then I failed the cluster over to
the updated node and verified functionality from Outlook, OWA, etc. Then I
applied the OS and Exch updates on my OWA server and verified functionality.
Then I applied OS and Exch DST updates to the node that had been the Active
but was now the passive. Then I applied security updates and rebooted. I
have yet to run the Exchange Calendar Update Tool, but am thinking about
kicking it off this weekend...

Now, regarding store levels... I had previously applied the update for
MS06-029 that included store.exe version 6.5.7650.28 and had already gone
through setting security for the accounts that needed it. After applying the
Exch DST update, the store.exe version is 6.5.7651.61. Now that is from the
actual version in the properties of the store.exe file in explorer (not in
ESM, go to Help - IS properties it displays 6.5.7638.1). I had no issues
with the Store not mounting or anything like that after the update. As I
understand from reading KB926666 "this update is cumulative".... I don't see
anything in the article that says you had to be at a certain version, but
after you apply the update it will bring you up to current level and include
changes made in previous updates.

Hope this helps. I wish you the best on the updates!
