Re: when is the bes time for setting up clustering
Rodney,
What we have is the following:
1. We migrated users from NT 4.0 to Win 2k3 domain a year ago. Exchange
5.5 is still left in the old NT 4.0 domain. So all the users are already
migrated.
2. There is a two-way trust between the NT 4.0 and Win2K3 domain, and ADC
is set up. So we can access our Exchange 5.5 based emailing.
3. Plan to set up the first Exchange 2k3 server and join it into the
existing Exchange org. Then migrate all the mailboxes, public folders, and
etc.
4. Then we will get rid of the old Exchange 5.5
Thanks for the brief answer but we are not that experienced. Can you give
us some more details or links. We have the following questions if you don't
mind:
1. Because we Clustering cannnot co-exist with ADC, SRS, can we set up the
clustering on the first Exchange 2k3? If we can, how, please advise.
2. If we cannot set up clustering on the first Exchange 2k3, what's the
best way to set up clustering? If we have to set up clusting on another
Exchange 2k3 first, how to transfer the storage groups and associated DB from
the first Exchange 2k3 to the second one?
Thanks a lot.

STOP! Read the deployment guide at
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/library - Go on, then come back! I will
wait.

Good.

I would not migrate anything to it. I would just use it for the ADC, SRS,
and to get Exchange 2003 into the org. This machine is just for the
migration, after word you uninstall Exchange to remove it from the Org and
then remove it from the domain - leaving only the cluster in place. This
machine does not require beefy hardware!

I would not do this until you have all the users mailboxes on the cluster -
fully functional.

Links are above, read everything you can on the MS site, since you already
read the Deployment guide :)

The first Exchange 2k3 machine CAN NOT be part of a Cluster. This is a hard
rule.

Follow the deployment guide on how to setup the cluster, come back here with
any detailed questions. You will only migrate to the cluster, so no
transfering is required. By the way, they would be in the same org, so
mailbox moved would do it very easily :)
