Exchange Cluster routing problem..
hy.
i'm having a 'little problem' i'm migrating an exchange 2003 (fully patched)
organization to a FE-BE structure with BE clustered in 2 machines.
the actual organization has also a smart host (sendmail server for mail
filtering).
this was the planning.
1- create the exch cluster resource.
2- move the maiboxes and PF resources to the nre custered exchange
3- 'transform' the old exchange server to a FE server.
I had no problem in creating the clustered Exchange and joining it to the
existing exchange organization.
i moved few test mailboxes to the new storage group and found out that the
old exchange (the one with the smart host) is not able to communicate, all
the mail sent to resources resident in the new server remain stuck in queue
(while mail coming from the new server to the old one are regularly
delivered). I tryed to move the smarthost on the new server (cluster) and
remove it from the old one and the problem is the same, within the exchange
organization the server that holds the smart host settings is not able to
deliver to the other server...
so now i'm in the 'middle' of this migration and i'm not sure how to go on..
but i'd really love to understand the problem..
and i'm also not able to enable the FBA authentication for the OWA in the
clustered exchange.
Hope someone can help me.
thank U.
Jo

It shouldn't have a smarthost.
You need to take the smarthost off the SMTP VSI and create a Routing
Group with an SMTP Connector. Make the FE the master and the BE will
be a member. On the configuration you make the FE the "Local
Bridgehead" and enter the smarthost there.

You don't create an FE and then put OWA/FBA on the cluster. You do
that on the BE. SSL on the FE (with or without FBA) and then no SSL on
the BE.
