Installation question on Kb916803 on a 2-node A/P Exchange 2003 cluster
I got the alert warning that says the following when I attempted to
install on passive node:

"Setup has detected that Cluster Service is running on this computer.
You must manually shut down all dependent resources using the Cluster
Administrator and stop the Cluster Service before continuing. You must
manually restart them when finished. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328839 for more details."

I'm a little hazy on this so to install 916803 on a 2-node A/P Exchange
2003 cluster would the following be the correct way to install this
patch?

[Option A]
-Go into Cluster Admin, right click Passive Node and select "Stop
Cluster Service"
-Install Patch 916803
-Restart Cluster Service on Passive Node
-Failover to this passive node.
-Go into Cluster Admin, right click Passive Node and select "Stop
Cluster Service" on former active node that is now in passive mode.
-Install Patch 916803
-Restart Cluster Service on on former active node that is now in
passive mode.
-Failback to passive node that started out as active node.

or

[Option B]
-Go into Cluster Admin, right click Passive Node and select "Stop
Cluster Service"

-Take which cluster Groups or items offline on Active Node?
[Group A] has Cluster IP, Cluster Name, Quorum Disk, DTC for Exchange
[Group B] has Shared Exchange store and log drives,Exchange Cluster
IP, Exchange Cluster name, Exchange System Attendant, Exchange HTTP
Virtual, Exchange IMAP, Exchange IS, Exchange MTA, Exchange MS Search,
Exchange POP3, Exchange Routing, Exchange SMTP virtual server

-Install Patch 916803 on Passive Node
-Restart Cluster Service on Passive Node
-Go into Cluster Admin, right click Active Node and select "Stop
Cluster Service"
-Install Patch 916803 on Active Node
-Restart Cluster Service on Active Node
-Finally Bring groups and resources back online.
-Test failover and failback.

Which direction do I need to take? I am in the process of setting up a
testbed cluster but not all of the hardware has arrived yet.

Any assistance or criticism appreciated. :-)

Thanks!
Jon

Re: Installation question on Kb916803 on a 2-node A/P Exchange 2003 cluster
So there is no need for this update to be connected to store in an
offline manner?

It doesn't change anything database-wise during the hotfix and thus
each passive node can be patched independently with Exchange still
online on the active node?

Is this a fairly typical message you would receive with an Exchange
hotfix in a clustered environment?

My previous experience has been mainly with standalone systems.

Thanks again!

the installation will require a reboot; and yes that message is typical when
installing a patch on a cluster.

I installed this patch on an active/active cluster, I had no problems
whatsoever.

In general pratice I always stop my cluster service.
