Outlook Connection to Exchange Server Hangs Up
Outlook 2003 Professional. Exchange Server 2003.
I have an Outlook client who connects to our exchange server over the
internet using "RPC over HTTP" to make the connection. Below is a
description of his problem, a problem I have had reported by others with the
same configuration. What might be causing this?
Microsoft Outlook â I connect and it sends and downloads. Then, after a
minute or so, I see a red exclamation point in a yellow diamond in the
Outlook icon which is at the bottom right of my screen where all the programs
that are running show. When I put the mouse over the symbol a message saying
âMicrosoft Office Outlook is requesting data from the serverâ pops up. It
stays up from then on and if I quit the program the Outlook window closes but
it doesnât really quit. I can go into the Windows Task Manager under the
âProcessesâ tab and it shows Outlook as still running. I know this is true
because if I start Outlook again it doesnât ask me for the password for the
server; it just opens up the Outlook window. It isnât able to connect to the
server. However, if I âEnd Processâ in the Task Manager and quit Outlook
that way, when I start it again, it asks me for the network password. Then
it connects, downloads, sends, and I get the same symbol saying it is
requesting data. This cycle repeats itself every time I want to send an
email.
Also, it hasnât fully synced the Sent Message folder because it hasnât ever
kept the data window open long enough to finish that process.

That could be caused by myriad things. I would start by examining the
quality of the network connection.

Re: Outlook Connection to Exchange Server Hangs Up
Dear Ed:
The user in question has tried it at his home and work locations (wireless
connections) and gets the same results. I know two test points does not rule
out network quality, but it may give some reason to look elsewhere for the
problem.
Another issue the user mentioned, which may or may not be related is the
following:
Microsoft Word â I have also noticed in all the time I spend with the Task
Manager window open that even if I have quit Microsoft Word and all the Word
windows are closed, it still shows as running in the Task Manager window. I
donât know if this is related to above, but doesnât cause any problems.

Perhaps you want to leave Exchange out of this picture for now and look for
workstation performance issues, like a fragmented disk, insufficient disk
space, insufficient memory, or the like.

I have a similar problem with Outlook not completely quitting.
Occasionally, for no reason I can pinpoint, when I quit Outlook the
Outlook process continues to run. I have a DSL connection to my ISP's
e-mail server (Earthlink). The background process continues to check
for and download e-mail, even when the Outlook application is not
running.
I have plenty of memory, the disk is not overly fragmented, and I have
plenty of disk space. The differences between my setup and the one
described in the earlier posts are such that it seems the only common
denominator is the Outlook process not quitting when it's supposed to.
