Re: UK pound sign not displaying on sent emails
Hi
Thanks for the response.
As I said, the problem occurs even when sending mails internally so it's not
an outside mail server problem. The regional settings in Windows are
definitely set to UK, as are the clients. I just don't know where else the
characters could be getting stripped out. The customer has tried disabling
a/v and email scanning with no success.
Regards.

Do you have a smart host configured in your SMTP virtual server?

Re: UK pound sign not displaying on sent emails
Hi
No - there is no smart host - Exchange uses DNS to deliver mail.
Also - I was wrong about the problem being there on internal mail.
Apparently it is not.
The customer has found a workaround by changing the character set within the
Outlook client - under Tools / Options / Mail Format / International Options.
By default this is set to "Auto". If this is changed to Unicode UTF-8 the
pound sign displays OK.
This suggests that using the Auto setting is allowing Exchange to use it's
own character set and this is not working. The question then is - where is
this setting within Exchange 2007 ?
It is obviously impractical to change every Outlook client and it also
doesn't get around the probelm for OWA.
Thanks

Re: UK pound sign not displaying on sent emails
It is my understanding that Exchange doesn't do anything with the character
set. It sounds like your problem is with the setting in Outlook and you've
found it.

Re: UK pound sign not displaying on sent emails
But as I said the same problem occurs in OWA as well. The setting change in
Outlook partially gets around the problem, but only for the £ character. Some
other characters still don't work, such as tabs.

Can't you make the same character set change in IE?

Hi
I've just run into this issue as well, the £ is not displayed by
either Outlook 2003 or 2007. Entourage 2008 shows it as does IE6 7
and Safari etc. but not Outlook. If this is the default setting for
Outlook then I have a real problem with an HTML mailshot we're sending
out since we can't change the settings on the recipient's machines. I
doesn't matter which program you use to create the HTML Outlook
doesn't handle it properly (in fact it's rendering of HTML is all over
the place compared to IEs)
Is there a work around that the sender can use to ensure that the
email is rendered by Outlook as it was intended?
Thanks
Tim
