Missing Sent Mail
A client using mac mail via imap connected to an Exchange 2003 server
recently has been experiencing some missing mail issues.
The user sends an email with attachment to an external user. He checks his
sent items later to make sure he sent it, and it is not in the sent items.
The server shows logs of the message being delivered to the external
recipient.
He actually composed and sent the same message again thinking the mail was
not ever sent, and that one sent fine, and showed up in his sent items.
My first thoughts were to check deleted items, and attempt to recover
delteed items via owa. Nothing found there indicating where this sent mail
went.
Second I used PFDAVAdmin to view the mailbox to see if maybe a cached
mailbox may be the culprit, to no avail.
I've tested sending mail from the client to various emails, with attachment,
and they all seem to show up in sent items. This is so sporadic I am unable
to duplicate it with consistancy.
I've also tried forwarding email to see if that may be the cause, being that
forwarded or reply emails don't go to the sent mail folder, or stay with the
original message etc.. That is not the case either.
Any ideas on what to look at next to isolate the cause?

Re: Missing Sent Mail
You might try looking in the dumpster of the send items folder. You can turn
on the dumpster in outlook with the below referenced instructions. That
would allow you to fire up outlook, select the sent items folder and go to
tools/recover deleted items from *that* folder to see if you find your
missing items.

Re: Missing Sent Mail
Thanks for you reply,
I enabled the dumpster for all folders and opened the mailbox using outlook
2003.
I was not able to find the missing sent items in the sent mail folder, but I
did locate a few of versions of the missing email in the drafts folder. I
suspect this is from an auto save as the email. The exchange log shows 4
versions of one email sent, each with different sizes varying frmo 3075K to
3521K, over a two day period. Only 1 of these can be found in the clients
Sent items, and that is on the second day.
The user has never had issues within sent items missing prior to a week ago.
The same configuration has been used on this cilent machine for well over a
year. The only change made to mail configuration recently is our hosted mail
provider (brightmail) and that change does not impact anything on the client
end of sending emails. I'm puzzled as to how to replicate this and/or
determine the source of this anomoly.
Any other ideas?
